Behind the Gates: Orton Plantation
Dillon Epp & Nick Dawson

Third Tuesday Evening Adult Program

June 18, 7 – 9 p.m.

Join the NC Maritime Museum at Southport and The Friends of the Museum as we present our Third Tuesday Evening Adult Program, Behind the Gates: Orton Plantation with Dillon Epp & Nick Dawson. The Orton Plantation, home of Roger Moore, Benjamin Smith, and James Sprunt, was closed to the public in 2010 and acquired by Louis Moore Bacon. A fury of renovations, improvements and collaborations have been ongoing. Epp and Dawson will describe their efforts to restore the rice fields, long leaf pine forest, and gardens of this historic 8,500 acre property. The program will be held at the Southport Community Building, 223 East Bay St., Southport. Program is free, call the Museum at (910)457-0003 to register.

Spring Into History with a Sunset Cruise

southport_sunset_no_creditThe North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport invites you to spring into history as we set sail aboard the Scuba South II on Saturday, June 1. Enjoy wine, cheese, and a beautiful sunset on an evening cruise along the Cape Fear River.

This scenic cruise will take passengers along the river bluff past the "sleepy little fishing village of Southport," the Quarantine Station, Bowensville, Price's Creek lighthouse, Sunny Point Military Ocean Terminal, and finally Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson. A knowledgeable historian will narrate the cruise as we go along.

Time and tide permitting, Captain Strickland will return down river to skirt Battery Island and enter the channel leading to the mouth of the Cape Fear River for a closer look at Smith Island and Fort Caswell.

The boat departs at 6:30pm and should return to the dock by 8pm. Participants will meet at the Scuba South II dock in the Old Yacht Basin, next to Fishy Fishy Restaurant.

Registration closes on May 24 and the cost is $25 for Museum members and $35 for non-members. For more information or to reserve your spot, call (910) 457-0003.
